Lulama's Story

Finding Direction through the Ocean

Lulama Komisa first arrived at Unstressed Surf School as a young teenager facing significant challenges in his life. After leaving school early and moving between relatives, he struggled to find stability and direction.

A friend eventually brought him to a Saturday surf session.

At first, Lulama spoke very little English, but he showed determination and natural balance in the water. Week by week, he developed both his surfing ability and his confidence.

By the age of eighteen, Lulama had become a strong swimmer and surfer and went on to qualify as a South African lifeguard.

With support from the community, he later completed professional surf instructor training in Jeffreys Bay.

Today, Lulama works as a surf instructor and plays an important mentoring role within the Unstressed program, guiding younger surfers as they begin their own journeys.

As he once shared with a mentor:

“When I feel stressed or frustrated, I go for a surf. When I come back, I’m calm and everything feels easier to solve.”
